What you should know about processed foods

When thinking of processed frozen foods, you might believe that they are all unhealthy – but processing a food doesn’t automatically make it not good for you!. Frozen foods are handled and altered in some way before they get to your pantry or refrigerator. Most foods are processed – changed, prepared or packaged – in some way before we eat them. Some processed foods have ingredients added, such as sweeteners, oils, colors and preservatives.

Processed food can help you eat more nutrient-dense foods. Milk and juices sometimes are fortified with calcium and vitamin D, and breakfast cereals may have added fiber. Canned fruit (packed in water or its own juice) is a good option when fresh fruit is not available. Some minimally processed food such as pre-cut vegetables and pre-washed, bagged spinach are quality convenience foods for busy people.

Highly processed foods often contain preservatives and food additives, such as artificial colors, flavors, and texturing agents. While these substances increase the shelf life and improve the flavor and appearance of food products, they can be unhealthy due to the high-fat content and added calories. Sugar, salt, high-fructose corn syrup, and other types of artificial sweeteners are common food additives that improve the taste but can result in weight gain, heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.

The key to healthy eating starts with you. Familiarize yourself with what to look for and talk with your health care professional or nutrition expert to discuss a food plan that works best for you. Classification systems, although well-intentioned, don't tell the whole story and, unfortunately, result in misunderstanding consumers.
